"Yoga has been an incredible experience for me.
It really gives me this intense feeling of body consciousness. Meaning, I feel very
aware of my limitations and the abilities my body has. It has really struck me several
times in class when I have either done something I thought difficult with ease, and other
times when what may of looked simple was actually quite problematic. After class I always
have a wonderful sense of calm. Even on my most stressful days, practicing yoga soothes my mind
and body. I do think yoga is something I would like to continue practicing, whether that
is on my own time or through a combination of classes. I can honestly see yoga really
helping with the affects of aging. All in all this has been a very positive experience
for me."

"I love yoga! I very much enjoyed the first assignment
and would like to read more about
the mind body element, which can be easily skipped over if I don't take advantage of this
chance to acknowledge the importance connection. My first small introduction to yoga was
this summer, when I was training to be a case manager for a homeless shelter in NYC. It was
an afternoon workshop and we learned a cycle of movements, which really energized me and got
me feeling very awake and aware of my body. Last summer working at a homeless shelter I
became very aware of how my body responds to different 'threats' or tense situations and
learned to be very careful with the message my body language sent. I also was very aware
of my emotions and reactions to my…well very intense days. I would repeat the cycle of
poses I was taught each morning and I started to treasure that opportunity to cognitively
connect those two aspects of my self that I felt heighten aware of. I absolutely learned
the connection between exhaustion or frustration and a body tense. When I wasn't aware of
my tensed muscles or poses it started to impact my mood and this lesson drew me strongly
to take advantage of this opportunity to study with you before returning to the shelter.
I really enjoy yoga, especially the applications that extend beyond the times on the mat.
I really hope to find ways to practice this next year... I really value how I feel in
yoga I am working WITH my body, and sometimes in the past when I have focused solely
on strength training I find myself working AGAINST myself and feeling exhausted. I have
really appreciated the days I have yoga, and I feel more energized and focused after class.
I sleep a lot better as well. Also this has been a very crazy time of my college
career with the senior art show going up this week, and preparation since Yoga began,
so this has been a highlight of my weeks." Kelly
"...I value stretching a lot, because of
my cerebral palsy.
When I’m stressed I tend to hunch over and curl everything up.
Stretching helps me to open my body up again, and feel more alert and calm...
I love yoga!!
Most days after practicing I feel centered and ready to conquer anything. At the same time
it is relaxing. Since I started taking yoga last year, I’ve found it a great way for me to
stay fit and calm through stressful times, and it also helps me stay aligned while I’m here
at school (and I can’t see my physical therapist). This semester yoga has helped me more
mentally then anything, because I have had a really rough year. Yoga gives me an outlet to
stay connected with myself, and keep a level head. I think that I will continue to practice
yoga for many years to come. It’s helped me out so much this semester that I am seriously
considering finding a class at home that I can take over the summer, so that I can continue
to learn and grow from it. " Kayla
